Your Footage Upload Guide

You've booked your RideReview. What happens next?

Getting your footage to SmoothRider is straightforward.

Once you've recorded your ride, follow the steps below. If you're using an Insta360 or another 360° camera, please send the original footage wherever possible rather than editing or compressing it first.

Step 1 – Record Your Ride

Record your ride using your motorcycle camera.

360° footage is recommended

A 360° camera gives SmoothRider the greatest opportunity to see:

  • Your road position

  • Your position within the lane

  • Your approach to bends

  • Your relationship with other traffic

  • Your observations and decision-making

  • How your riding changes as the road develops

However, 360° footage isn't essential.

GoPro, DJI, Insta360 or other motorcycle-mounted cameras can all provide useful information.

Before you start

Please make sure your camera is:

  • Securely mounted.

  • Fully charged or connected to an appropriate power supply.

  • Set to a suitable recording mode.

  • Positioned so that the road ahead and your riding position can be seen as clearly as possible.

Please do not operate your camera while riding.

Step 2 – Choose Your Footage

You don't necessarily need to send us your entire day's riding.

In fact, choosing a specific section can produce a much more useful RideReview.

For example:

"I'd particularly like you to look at my riding through the twisty section between A and B."

You might choose footage containing:

  • Challenging bends

  • Busy traffic

  • Junctions

  • Overtaking

  • Filtering

  • Rural roads

  • Urban riding

  • A route you regularly ride

  • Something you're particularly unsure about

Your package determines how much footage we review.

RideReview Flash – £15
Up to 10 minutes of reviewed footage.

RideReview – £60
Up to 30 minutes of reviewed footage.

RideReview Plus – £100
Up to 60 minutes of reviewed footage.

RideReview Pro – £150
Up to 90 minutes of reviewed footage.

If your original camera file is much longer than the footage you want reviewed, that's fine. You don't need to send us the entire ride.

Step 3 – Tell Us About Your Ride

Before uploading your footage, please provide:

Your name

Motorcycle

Date of ride

Starting location

Finishing location

Approximate length of footage

And, most importantly:

Is there anything you'd particularly like us to look at?

For example:

"I'm not confident on right-hand bends."

"I'd like you to look at my overtaking."

"I'm not sure about my road positioning."

"I think I brake too late."

"I want to know whether I'm riding smoothly."

You don't have to identify anything.

If you're not sure what you need to improve, simply tell us:

"Watch the ride and tell me what you see."

That's exactly what RideReview is for.

Step 4 – Upload Your Footage

Once your footage is ready, use the SmoothRider RideReview Upload Link supplied in your booking email.

The upload will be handled through Dropbox.

Important

You do not need a Dropbox account to send your footage.

Follow the upload instructions provided and allow the upload to complete before closing the browser or switching off your computer.

Large video files can take time

A high-resolution 360° recording can be very large.

A 60–90 minute recording may potentially be tens of gigabytes in size, so please don't worry if the upload takes some time.

Your internet connection is likely to be the biggest factor affecting upload speed.

For large files, we recommend starting the upload when you don't need your computer for anything else and leaving it to complete.

Step 5 – Tell SmoothRider You've Uploaded It

Once the upload is complete, please email SmoothRider to confirm:

"My RideReview footage has been uploaded."

Please include your name and booking reference if you have one.

We'll then confirm that we've received your footage and begin the review.

What Happens Next?

This is where RideReview gets interesting.

SmoothRider will review your footage using professional video analysis software.

Your review can include real-time picture-in-picture commentary, allowing you to see the road footage while hearing and seeing the coach explain what is happening.

We can pause, rewind and examine particular moments in your ride.

We'll look at what the footage allows us to see, including areas such as:

  • Observation

  • Planning

  • Road positioning

  • Cornering

  • Speed management

  • Hazard awareness

  • Smoothness

  • Decision-making

  • Interaction with other road users

The purpose isn't to catch you out.

It's to help you understand your riding.

A Note About What Video Can and Can't Show

RideReview is a powerful coaching tool, but it has limitations.

A camera cannot see everything you can see.

Depending on the camera position and footage available, we may not be able to determine exactly where you were looking, what you noticed or what you were thinking at a particular moment.

We will never pretend that the footage tells us something it cannot tell us.

Instead, we'll explain what we can see, what we can reasonably infer and where additional information would be useful.

This is one reason why 360° footage is recommended.

Important Safety Information

Please don't change your riding simply because you are recording it for RideReview.

Ride normally.

Do not speed, take unnecessary risks, deliberately seek hazards or alter your riding to create interesting footage.

Your safety comes first.

The camera should be mounted securely and operated before you ride.

Your RideReview

Once we've completed your review, we'll provide your feedback in the format applicable to the RideReview package you've purchased.

Your review is designed to give you something useful to take back onto the road:

What are you doing well?

What could you improve?

Why does it matter?

What should you work on next?

That's the purpose of RideReview.
